The music is good - but then I know nothing about folk. So far so good.

New books to add to the growing pile
Doc about choc
This doc is great; it makes me want to curl up with a book and eat chocolate by the Mast Brothers. I like the use of black screens (or whatever the proper term is) with voice over, the photography and the titling. Not so sure about the corpsing at the start of the film, or the music. But hey, minor grumbles.

Battle For Hearts And Minds
Although this trailer looks absolutely stunning, it doesn't really tell the story of the film enough. This is from Danfung Dennis' website:
July 2nd, 2009, 4000 US Marines of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade launched a major helicopter assault into an insurgent stronghold in the Helmand River Valley in southern Afghanistan to break a military stalemate that had been reached with the Taliban.
Independent filmmaker Danfung Dennis was embedded with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Company, as they were dropped 18km behind enemy lines to seize a key bridge. Within a few hours of landing, fierce fighting erupts and continues for the next three days, in which Lance Corporal Charles Sharp, from Adairsville, Georgia was was shot and killed by a Taliban fighter.
After the initial fighting, the Marines search for the insurgents that killed Lance Corporal Sharp. Frustration sets in as the Marines try to fight a ghost like enemy and IED's cut them off from resupply. The Marines objective is to secure and protect the population, but the Afghan villagers complain that the fighting has driven them into desert, bombing has destroyed their homes, and intrusive raids disrespect their culture. Trying to balance their roles between warriors and statesmen, the Marines struggle to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people.
Another doc shot with the Canon 5D. Are these industry standard now?

Manzine
Oh yeah, print is dead, it's all about iPads now. In fact reading is dead. Think TED talks and video - especially video you can superimpose your massive face into. Well, sort of. There must be more to the iPad than watching Star Trek behind a smeary film or tweeting between Hob Nobs just how dull the World Cup was. But in the meantime, there's Manzine. Here's the blogger link to read on your iPad. But get personal and get the print edition.

My first trailer for my first doc
<p>Against The Clock Trailer 1 from Tom Newman on Vimeo.</p>
Everything here was shot with my camcorder. I took it along to take footage to help me piece the final film together. So this is just give you an idea of what style the finished film will take and a bit of an idea of what drag racing is all about. In this clip Nigel discuses with Pete what dial in he should go for.

These excellent guys are shooting my documentary, which at this moment is tentatively named Against The Clock. There are just two of them: Rhys Thwaites-Jones and Richard Brandon-Cox. So far we’ve been filming with Rhys’ camera as Richard smashed his up in India. I don’t know, but I think it might have been the bit in clip where they crash the rickshaw. Yeah, let’s say it was. It was that bit. Anyway they’re great. Thanks guys.

Domestic violence radio ad
When I get around to it I'm upgrading my Spotify account so I can skip all the ads. Radio ads are shit and for good reason. Radio advertising is on the whole, pretty poorly regarded in the ad world. You don't get to go on shoots and meet celebrities - as you would TV. You don't get to impress your mum/dad/girlfriend/boyfriend with a billboard. And you can't do something whizzy on your iPhone in front of all your mates down the pub. They’re last minute, no money briefs that nobody wants to do. Spotify radio ads are appalling.
Oh the examples; the Lynx effect that makes Jessica Jane Whateverhername sound like a call centre drone. The Accenture recruitment ad that asks you to read the banner at the same time. Oh and last but not least: the Peugeot ad that seems to have been banged out in the studio by the client and account team over a bottle of rose.
But the Metropolitan Police Service ad for domestic violence is good. Really good. So good it makes you feel a bit sick - especially if you've ever heard anything similar in real life. The ad is simple. Just a couple screaming at each other, as if heard through the living room wall. Then the man beats the shit out of woman and you hear every, single plea and moan.
The only version I could find from the Met's own website. It's not as good because it uses characters to dopily explain everything, but have a listen and imagine they're not there.

Incidentally, I don't know if the Met do this, but in Bristol they have a dedicated response team for domestic violence calls. It seemed to be made up of older policeman who acted like benevolent father figures and they were great.
